Eliminating Your Work Day Distractions

  • Eliminating work day distractions

Endless email streams and never-ending to-do lists. As a business-owner, we know you’re acquainted. It can be difficult to manage time while running a successful business. Distractions are often a part of the process when you’re single-handedly keeping a company chugging along. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. Here are some suggestions for getting rid of work day distractions:

 1. Get your most dreaded duties done first.

There are always things on our to-do lists that feel more like chores than anything else. Our first suggestion to eliminate daily distractions is to do these tasks first. By knocking out the chores, you can hone in on the tasks that fill the rest of your day. We have all had those days where that one to-do is daunting us from the back of our mind. Sometimes that task even makes its way to the forefront of our minds. When this happens, we get distracted. We waste time in order to ignore the task or even push off the task. But, if we get that to-do done first, we won’t be distracted by the dread it causes in our minds. Also, maybe that dreadful duty won’t be so bad in the future if we know we will get it done sooner rather than later.

 2. Do not disturb.

Owning/running a business means that multiple people are always wanting your attention at once. Whether that’s through emails, texts, calls, or meetings, your time is divided. Our second suggestion to eliminate distractions in your work day to to go AWOL for a while. Even just an hour a day that your phone and computer aren’t constantly dinging can help you get the work that you think is most important done. Even better, set your do not disturb period to the same time every day to create a routine for you and the people trying to contact you.

3. Organize your work space.

Life gets out of hand, especially while running a business. Documents, sticky notes, etc. often clutter desk spaces and even desktops. Our third suggestion for beating distractions is to clean up those parts of the work day. If papers and notes are organized, less time and thought goes into accessing what you need, when you need it. Also, finally organizing things can check off that forever-floating to-do from the bottom of the list.

4. Limit the list & delegate.

There are probably a lot of times that “I’ll just do it” goes through your brain. Instead, try training employees on how to complete tasks that the owner of a company really doesn’t have to be doing. Put some trust in others to get the job done right. By delegating, your to-do list will end up being much shorter and therefore feel more manageable. When it feels like you can get things done, it’s much easier to actually get things done.

5. Implement AccuPOS.

At AccuPOS, we know that there are better ways for you to spend your time than troubleshooting a faulty POS system. One of the biggest distractions for retail/restaurant business owners can be a POS crash. That’s why we’re here: to eliminate your workday distractions and provide a smarter POS solution for your business.
