Daylight savings has thankfully arrived, a new Pope has been chosen, and as we prepare for the sunniest seasons, it’s helpful to start the spring cleaning process in our personal lives and at work. Popular spring cleaning methods (or, as Gwyneth Paltrow calls it, “editing your mess of a closet”) may include donating items you no longer use, updating your home décor to reflect the season, or pulling out the poolhouse plastic-ware.
As far as your restaurant or retail store is concerned, the first step to preparing your POS system for a busier season is to make sure you have the latest version of its POS software. This will ensure that your business remains protected from POS system security breaches and that you are able to maximize all of the newest benefits of your POS software.
Keeping the essentials
For your home life, it’s usually best to try to part with items you haven’t worn in ages (or have never worn) while only keeping items that you know you will wear soon and that still look up-to-date. Getting rid of duplicate or similar items is also advised. I can personally attest to this; I walked into my friend Cheryl’s gargantuan walk-in closet last week to see no less than eight pairs of the same shoes, albeit in different colors. I would be willing to bet quite a bit that she’ll never wear half of them. How many people have clothes to match shoes in neon bumblebee yellow, after all? Restaurants and retailers too should update their POS systems to only include what makes sense for their specific businesses. Why keep POS software features that you’ll never use?
Out with the old
Trends change and needs evolve (exhibit A: shoulder pads; exhibit B: stationary cash registers). While you may have thought that Christian LaCroix dress circa 1983 made sense at one time, it’s safe to say you probably won’t be wearing it to dinner any time soon. Using an immobile cash register in your restaurant makes about the same amount of sense. Your wardrobe and your POS system should be current.
The most current POS software for small businesses should have:
- Integration with CRM.
- Tracking sales trends in real time from any location, by the hour, day, or month.
- Bank reconciliation with no incongruity between your accounting statement and your bank statement.
- The elimination or reduction of the need for superfluous bookkeeping.
